This holiday is a national pagan festival celebrating the “rebirth of nature” from “Winter”. This public holiday is celebrated in Shkumbin (Elbasan) where high authorities of the country attend the festivities in celebration of this holiday.

 

Tuesday, 22 March 2011: Sultan Nouruz Remembrance

Also known as “Sultan Nevruz”, this holiday is celebrated in countries that have been under the influence of Persian rule. In Albania, this is celebrated with special ceremonies in Tekke with served food. This is also a celebration of the birthday of “Ali” who is the cousin and son-in-law of the Islam prophet Muhammad.

This is an Islam public holiday, known as “Lesser Bairam” which signifies the end of the Ramadan (the Islamic Holy Month of Fasting).

This is in honor of the Catholic nun, Mother Teresa, who is well known for her works and assistance with the poor and diseased people.

 

Wednesday, 16 November 2011: Eid al-Adha (Bajram i Vogel)

This public holiday is an Islam celebration which is also known as Greater Bairam, signifying a bigger significance than Eid ul-Fitr.

 

Tuesday, 29 November 2011: Liberation Day

This public holiday marks the liberation of Albania, which is similar to “Independence Day”.

 

Sunday, 25 December 2011: Christmas Day

Celebrated by Christians as the birth of Jesus Christ.
