Austria celebrates most Christian Public Holidays with their families and friends. Public holidays that happened on a weekend are not moved, and many stores are usually closed at 1 pm on Saturday Holidays. Below you can find the public holidays celebrated in Austria:

 

Saturday, 1 January 2011: New Year’s Day

New Year’s Day is an international holiday celebrating the start of a New Year. Children sing carols and visit homes. Traditional food is served like pork and carp. The dining table is usually decorated with little pigs that are made up of marzipan, maple syrup, cookie dough, chocolate or fudge. Glucksbringer chocolates are exchanged in different shapes like gold coins, four leaf clovers or horseshoes.

 

Thursday, 6 January 2011: Epiphany

Austrians also celebrate the Christian holiday, Epiphany, which denotes the manifestation of Jesus Christ in two events: the visitation of the three wise men and the baptism of Jesus Christ by St John the Baptist. In Austria, the “Sternsinger” (star singers composed of 4 children representing the 3 kings and 1 star) walk from door to door and sing a bit about the epiphany, collecting money for charity.

This Christian holiday is in celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection.

 

Sunday, 1 May 2011: Labour Day

This holiday is in honor of the work done by the workers and laborers in the country.

Most Austrians are catholic, and they celebrate the day when Jesus ascended to Heaven.

 

Monday, 13 June 2011: Whit Monday

Whit Monday, also known as “Pentecost Monday” is another Christian Public Holiday that celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus.

 

Thursday, 23 June 2011: Corpus Christi Day

This Christian holiday is celebrated in honor of the Holy Eucharist which is also known as the “Feast of the Most Holy Body of Christ”. Some call this day, “Day of Wreaths”.

 

Monday, 15 August 2011: Assumption Holiday

Austria celebrates the Christian holiday, “Assumption of Mary”, where it marks the day when the Virgin Mary ascended to Heaven.

 

Wednesday, 26 October 2011: National Day

This marks the day when the Austria was once again an independent country, also marks the day the Neutrality Constitution was made in 1955.

Thursday, 8 December 2011: Immaculate Conception Day
