In Bangladesh, New Year’s Day is an optional Holiday along with some Christian Holidays, while most of the holidays are Islam or Hindu religious holidays. Monday, 21 February 2011: Shahid Dibosh (Except Schools)
This is also known as “International Mother Language Day” or “Language Martyr’s Day” or “Martyr’s day” to commemorate the sacrifices and protests in order to protect the “Bangla” as the national language on 1952 during the Bengali Language Movement.
Thursday, 17 March 2011: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Birth Anniversary
This day marks the birth anniversary of the father of nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Saturday, 26 March 2011: Independence Day (except schools)
This commemorates the day of Bangladesh declaration of independence which also marks the start of the Bangladesh Liberation War that took place in 1971. This is usually celebrated with parades and paying respects at the Jatiyo Smriti Soudho national memorial.

This holiday is also known as “Bangla New Year” which marks the first day of the Bengali Calendar.

Shab e-Barat is also known as “Ascension of the Prophet” and is a day for atonement and forgiveness. People gather to ask for blessings, forgiveness, saying prayers and other religious rituals on this day.

This marks the death anniversary of the founding president and father of the nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Monday, 22 August 2011: Sri Krishna Janamashtami
This is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna who is the avatar of the Hindu diety Vishnu.
