Friday, 22 April 2011: Good Friday
Good Friday is a Christian Holiday that celebrates the sacrifice and death of Jesus Christ. People celebrate the holiday by flying kites, usually at Horseshoe Bay Beach.
Tuesday, 24 May 2011: Bermuda Day
This is a traditional public holiday commemorating the first day that local residents go to the sea, this also marks the day when Bermuda shorts are used as Business attire. There are many spectator events such as road racing where people watch the racers on the pavements with their families and usually marking their own “space” around with a tape or rope.
Monday, 20 June 2011: National Heroes’ Day
This holiday is designated to honor the heroes of Bermuda. Currently, the only hero is Dame Lois Browne-Evans, DBE, JP, LLB, who became the first heroine of Bermuda after her contributions to the betterment of the country.
Thursday, 28 July 2011: Emancipation Day
This holiday is in remembrance of the emancipation of slaves of African origin, in remembrance of the abolition of serfdom or other methods of servitude.
Friday, 29 July 2011: Somers Day
This day marks the day when Admiral Sir George Somers discovered Bermuda in 1609. There is a 2-day cricket game that is played on Somers Day along with music, dances and a parade in Hamilton.
Monday, 5 September 2011: Labour Day
Bermuda also celebrates this International Holiday which commemorates the work done by workers and laborers to their country.
Friday, 11 November 2011: Remembrance Day
This holiday, otherwise known as Armistice Day or Veterans Day, is in honor of the armed forces who had died in World War I.
Sunday, 25 December 2011: Christmas Day
Christmas is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, spending the day with the family and attending mass.
Monday, 26 December 2011: Boxing Day
This is the day after Christmas where it is spent in relaxation with friends and family. Horse racing and also other fun activities make up this day. Leftovers and gifts are also given to those less fortunate.
Tuesday, 27 December 2011: Christmas Holiday
In lieu to Christmas Day which is on Sunday, the holiday is celebrated on the Tuesday.
