This day marks the foundation of the Union of Burma in 1947.

 

Wednesday, 2 March 2011: Peasants’ Day

This public holiday is in honor of the contributions of the farmers in Burma. People usually spend this day at their homes with their families or prayers in pagodas and temples.

 

Saturday, 19 March 2011: Tabaung Full Moon

This is an annual festival in Burma. People gather to enjoy pagoda festivities and activities such as Sand Stupa building and boat racing.

 

Sunday, 27 March 2011: Armed Forces Day

This day commemorates the resistance of the Burmese Army against the Japanese Occupation back in 1945.

Friday, 15 July 2011: Waso Full Moon

This day marks the beginning of the Buddhist Lent.

 

Tuesday, 19 July 2011: Martyrs Day

Martyrs Day is celebrated in honor of the leaders who were assassinated on 1947. People visit the Martyrs’ Mausoleum to pay their respects to the leaders.

 

Wednesday, 12 October 2011: Thadingyut Full Moon

This holiday marks the end of Lent, celebrating the anniversary of Buddha’s return to the human abode from the celestial abode.

 

Thursday, 10 November 2011: Tazaungmone Full Moon

This day marks an “offering of the robes” to the monks which celebrates Buddha’s teachings of “offering”. On this day, the homes, buildings and streets are illuminated. People gather to light candles offered to the pagodas. Weaving contests, Hot Air balloons and Fireworks festival are among the festivities on this day.

 

Sunday, 20 November 2011: National Day

This day commemorates the country’s independence from British rule.

 

Sunday, 25 December 2011: Christmas Day

This day marks the birth of Jesus Christ according to Christian beliefs.

 

Sunday, 25 December 2011: Kayin New Year

This marks the start of the New Year. In some cases, this day is celebrated twice since it is based on the phases of the Moon.
