In Malta, the holidays are celebrated with fervor. Festivals, parties and parade events are held to celebrate major National holidays. During religious holidays, the people go out to attend processions to celebrate the feasts.

 

Saturday, 1 January 2011: New Year’s Day

Malta celebrates the New Year with fireworks and parties. One tradition in Malta New Year is the sprinkling of wine, which signifies cleansing and purity at the start of the New Year. People can enjoy the New Year carnival with masquerades, fashion shows, and other festivities.

 

Thursday, 10 February 2011: Feast of St. Paul’s shipwreck

This day celebrates St. Paul, the patron saint of Malta, where his shipwreck brought him to the island of Malta to preach Christianity. Parades with St. Paul’s statue and fireworks are held this day.

 

Saturday, 19 March 2011: Feast of St. Joseph

This day celebrates St. Joseph, who was the stepfather and husband of Mary.

 

Thursday, 31 March 2011: Freedom Day (Jum il-Haddiem)

This celebrates the day when the British army withdrew their troops from Malta.

 

Friday, 22 April 2011: Good Friday

This holiday celebrates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ and people go to mass in prayers and confession.

 

Sunday, 1 May 2011: Workers’ Day (Jum il-Haddiem)

This is also known as “Labor Day” where the works and contributions of the workers are being celebrated.

 

Tuesday, 7 June 2011: Sette Giugno

This is a National holiday that is in remembrance of riots that happened in Malta where British troops fired at the crowd back in 1919.

 

Wednesday, 29 June 2011: Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul (L-Imnarja)

This day is also known as “Festival of Light” where people light up bonfires to celebrate the midsummer, and feasts of both Saints Peter and Paul.

 

Monday, 15 August 2011: Feast of the Assumption

This religious holiday is to celebrate the Assumption of Mary to Heaven.

 

Thursday, 8 September 2011: Feast of Our Lady of Victories (Jum il-Vittorja)

This is a religious Christian holiday where the statue of Our Lady of Victories, which is a statue of the Virgin Mary, is being held out for a procession.

 

Wednesday, 21 September 2011: Independence Day (Jum I-Indipendenza)

This day celebrates Malta’s declaration of becoming an Independent state in 1964.

 

Thursday, 8 December 2011: Feast of Immaculate Conception

This religious Christian holiday is celebrated to honor Mary as “Immaculate” and “Pure”.

 

Tuesday, 13 December 2011: Republic Day (Jum ir-Repubblika)

This celebrates the day when the constitution of Malta was revised from a British colony to a republic.

 

Sunday, 25 December 2011: Christmas Day

This is a Christian celebration for the Birth of Jesus Christ.
