During Paraguay’s holidays, the people celebrate it with feasts of traditional foods, and people attend parties with friends and family with singing and parties. During religious holidays, people go to the Churches to pray and spend their time at home with their families.
Saturday, 1 January 2011: New Year’s Day
One of the traditions in Paraguay during New Year is the creation of dummies or effigies and burning them on midnight. These dummies are a representation of the bad luck of the past year. The New Year in Paraguay is celebrated with lots of noise and firecrackers to drive the bad spirits away.
Tuesday, 1 March 2011: National Heroes Day
This day is to commemorate those who have died for the country. The celebrations include commemorative speeches and parades.
Thursday, 21 April 2011: Maundy Thursday
Friday, 22 April 2011: Good Friday
Both days are Christian holidays wherein Maundy Thursday is to celebrate the “Last Supper” of Christ and Good Friday is to commemorate the crucifixion of Christ.
Sunday, 1 May 2011: Labor Day
This day is to celebrate the labors of the workers who have done works for their country.
Sunday, 15 May 2011: National Independence Day
This holiday is to celebrate Paraguay’s independence from Spain in 1811. On this day, families celebrate it in parties with barbeques, music and watch the parades in the city.
Sunday, 12 June 2011: Chaco Armistice Day
This public holiday remembers the war between Paraguay and Bolivia which was caused to obtaining rights to oil and natural gas. The day is often celebrated with parades to honor those who died during the war.
Monday, 15 August 2011: Asuncion Foundation Day
This day celebrates the founding of Asuncion where parades, speeches, folk dancing and other fun activities are held this day. Some traditional food made on this day is sopa paraguaya.
Thursday, 29 September 2011: Battle of Boqueron Day
This marks the last battle for the border conflict between Bolivia and Paraguay for the Chaco region.
Thursday, 8 December 2011: Virgin of Caacupe Day
This is a religious holiday, also celebrating the “Feast of the Immaculate Conception” where people walk in a pilgrimage to Caacupe and devote their time in prayers.
Sunday, 25 December 2011: Christmas Day
This is a religious holiday commemorating the Birth of Jesus Christ.
