The holidays in Suriname is not really celebrated with lots of loud festivities except during New Year’s. Families and friends spend their time in their homes and enjoy dinners with traditional food.

 

Saturday, 1 January 2011: New Year’s Day

Fireworks and noise making marks the start of the New Year in Suriname. One of the traditions practiced on this day is to create a straw dummy which represents the bad luck from last year – this dummy is burnt on midnight in New Year’s Eve.

 

Thursday, 3 February 2011: Chinese New Year

This day celebrates the New Year according to the Chinese Calendar. Here, people celebrate the New Year according to Chinese traditions. Saving money inside a red envelope represents fortune and wealth for the New Year.

 

Friday, 25 February 2011: Day of Liberation and Innovation

Sunday, 20 March 2011: Phagwah

On this day, people celebrate with parades, dances and concerts to celebrate “Spring” celebrated by Hindus.

Good Friday and Easter Monday are celebrated by Christians to mark the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.

 

Sunday, 1 May 2011: Labour Day

This day is to commemorate the labors done by the people for the country.

 

Friday, 1 July 2011: Emancipation Day

This public holiday celebrates the abolishment of Slavery.

 

Tuesday, 9 August 2011: Indegenous People’s Day

On this day, people in Suriname celebrate their traditional cultures.

 

Tuesday, 30 August 2011: Id Ul Ftr (End of Ramadan)

This is a Muslim religious holiday celebrating the end of the fasting month.

 

Monday, 10 October 2011: Maroons Day

Maroons day is celebrated with flowers, food, dances and drinking. This day celebrates the Maroons’ victory against the Dutch.

 

Wednesday, 26 October 2011: Divali

This is also known as “Festival of Lights” where it is celebrated by the Hindus to light the way of the Goddess of Wealth and Fortune.

 

Sunday, 6 November 2011: Id Ul Adha

This is a Muslim celebration, otherwise known as “Festival of Sacrifice”, where the Muslims sacrifices cattle or goats to commemorate Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son to God.

 

Friday, 25 November 2011: Republic Day

This is a day of celebration for Suriname’s Independence and declaration of becoming a Republic in 1980.

Monday, 26 December 2011: Second Day of Christmas

This day celebrates the Birth of Christ celebrated by the Christians.
