Holidays in Uganda are spent quietly at home with the family or celebrated with traditional dinners with friends. Some people travel during the long days off to relax with their family and others celebrate the religious holidays doing religious activities.

 

Saturday, 1 January 2011: New Year’s Day

Uganda decided to celebrate the New Year on February 18 after the elections.

During this day, the people celebrate the National Resistance Movement (NRM) liberation of Uganda in 1986.

Labour day celebrates the rights and the works done by the workers for the country.

 

Friday, 3 June 2011: Uganda Martyrs’ Day

This day is in honor of the Christian Martyrs who have died during the reign of King Mwanga.

 

Thursday, 9 June 2011: National Heroes Day

This day is to honor those who have fought during the guerilla in 1981-1985.

 

Tuesday, 30 August 2011: Idd el-Fitr (End of Ramadan)

This is a Muslim holiday celebrating the end of the Fasting Month, Ramadan.

 

Sunday, 9 October 2011: Independence Day

This day celebrates Uganda’s Independence from Britain in 1962.

 

Sunday, 6 November 2011: Idd-al-Adhuha (Feast of Sacrifice)

The Muslims celebrate this day by sacrificing cattle and goats to honor the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son to God.

 

Sunday, 25 December 2011: Christmas Day

This is a religious Christian holiday that celebrates the Birth of Jesus Christ.

 

Monday, 26 December 2011: Boxing Day

This day is to commemorate the birth of Christ by giving presents and donations to the less fortunate.
